I travelled a great deal via the interstate highway system throughout my childhood and into married life, always at the mercy of others in that powerful seat behind the wheel. My protestations of, ‘wait, pull over here, I want to take a picture,” were largely in vain, and I vowed, ‘someday…..’ Finally, someday arrived and on my first road trip, with both control of the wheel and the luxury of time, I stood helplessly uninspired, face to face with the most amazing scapes, knowing I could do no more and a great deal less than the dozens of photographers who had been there before me. What could I ‘say’ that hadn’t already become cliché? Turning the wheel over to a fellow traveler I sat in the back seat, exploring my new camera features, the lens trained out of window, and my sense of irony grew into a sense of discovery; This was, after all, the viewpoint I knew best.
